309. Tried and Tasted Roundup - Part I - Recipes

Tried and Tasted is the very popular, blogging event that turns the spotlight on one special blog each month.

The aim of T&T is to explore other foodies tastes, appreciate them and confirm that their recipes are worth it!

I was so pleased to be invited by Zlamushka, of Zlamushka's Spicy Kitchen and T&T's creator, to host Meena's blog, Hooked on Heat.

Hooked on Heat is a lovely blog featuring "Simple, everyday, modern, Indian home-cooking".

I have received such enthusiastic responses from bloggers. Many thanked me for introducing them to such a great blog. Meena's food is simple and tasty. Her recipes are well-written and she makes cooking Indian food interesting for those new to Indian cuisine.

Pooja Sekar, of Pooja's Kitchen, speaks for everyone who participated in this month's T&T when she says:

" i'm really hooked on to meena's hooked on heat ! she has a lovely blog out there with plenty of recipes and one can find recipes for daily cooking to elaborate dinner recipes... the best thing is i try something very simple from her blog and it turns out super hit !

Super hit indeed!

Now, I have the pleasure to announce a special treat. The reason Meena hasn't blogged since December is that she has been busy writing a cookbook.

I am giving a copy of Meena's cookbook as a prize. This will not be instant gratification. The winner will have to wait till the beginning of 2010 to receive it.

Each recipe entered is one chance to win the book. The winner will be chosen by the Random Integer Generator. I'll announce the winner in a week's time.

Onto the roundup. I have listed the entries in the order in which they were received. The roundup is split in two parts. Part I has entries 1-23 and Part II covers entries 24 - 45.

Please let me know if I have missed your entry.

Paneer tak-a-ak, Spiced crumbled paneer

1. Rehka of Plaintain Leaf sent the first entry. She made Paneer tak-a-tak,Spiced crumbled paneer from Hooked on Heat .

Rehka says: "IT'S JUST AWESOME WITH PLAIN PULAO AND PURI OR EVEN WITH ROTI TOO. I DIDN'T MADE ANY CHANGES".

Jeera Alu, Potatoes fried with cumin

2. Priya of Priya's Easy N Tasty Recipes, made Jeera Alu.

Priya "just loved the simplicity of this delicious and flavourful potatoes fried with cumin seeds from Meena's Hooked on Heat.

Vani of Mysoorean tried two of Meena's recipes.

Dahi Bhindi, Okra curry

3. Vani loves okra so she made Dahi Bhindi, a vegetarian curry of okra with yogurt and spices.

Ayam Masak Merah, Chicken in red chili sauce

4. Vani made Ayam Masak Merah from Hooked on Heat, because this Malaysian dish was calling to her. Chicken in red chili sauce is "very high on the heat factor" and Vani thought that a glass of lemonade would really help cool things down.

Aloo Palak

5. Hema of The Healthful Cook, had a busy week with interviews for her MBA admission but she took the time to make Aloo Palak, Potatoes and Spinach from Hooked on Heat.

Hema made a pita bread sandwich with the Aloo Palak.

Chana Masala (Chickpea curry)

6. When Parita of Parita's World saw Meena's recipe for Chana Masala, (Chickpea curry) she " couldnt resist my self and recreated this dish. I must say Meena has wonderful collection of indian dishes, few of them which i had forgotten and reminded me of old memories."

Parita has bookmarked many of Meena's recipes and can't wait to try them.

Ginger-Chilli Shrimp

7. Ginger-Chilli Shrimp is Priya's second recipe. Priya finds "Its kinda hard to quit Meena's Hooked On Heat if u go for a quick walk through her blog".

Zu of Zlamushka's Spicy Kitchen cooked six dishes from Meena's blog. Nobody can accuse her of not liking Meena's cooking! Every dish looks wonderful but the Chocolate-dipped strawberries are so beautiful and tempting, no wonder she used the photo for her blog banner.

Alu Fry

14. This is Priya's 3rd entry for T&T - Alu fry. Priya had never tried adding whole fennel seeds, whole coriander seeds and dry fenugreek leaves in a potato dish before and she loved Meena's recipe. She has made it a couple of times since and it has become a favourite in her home.

Her experience proves why one should participate in T&T. You'll get a new take on cooking.

15. Amanda, of Gluten-Free Maui, made Bok Choy in Coconut Milk from Hooked on Heat.

Amanda said "It was super easy to cook, very fast, and absolutely delicious." She'll be making this dish often.

Aloo parantha

16. Jaya Wagle, of Jayaspace, made Aloo parantha. These potato flat breads are her son's favourites since he was two years old.

Her recipe is similar to Meena's except that Jaya uses fennel seeds and ginger-garlic paste instead of cilantro, green chilies and onions.

Egg fried rice

17. Bindiya Singh, of In Love with Food, made Meena's Egg fried rice.

Bindiya saw Kylie Kwong cook fried rice on TV and had wanted to try it for a while. She saw Meena's recipe and made "this lovely, healthy, ready in a jiffy meal" which was devoured by her family.

Baingan Patiala, Spicy stir-fried eggplants

18. Soma, from eCurry, made Baingan Patiala, Spicy stir-fried eggplants from Hooked on Heat.

Soma makes this dish using nigella seeds and she was " happy to see someone else use the same but unusual spice with the eggplant".

Aloo Palak, Potato and spinach

19. Jaya Wagle of Jayaspace says "I am excited to send my second entry to the T&T event. Aloo Palak."

Jaya chose Meena's recipe because it is quick and easy to cook, delicious and very nutritious.

Strawberry and almond muffins

20. Here is Rekha, of Plaintain Leaf's , second entry.

Her Strawberry and almond muffins are eggless. She adapted Meena's recipe using flax powder. "They tasted just awesome".

Read Rekha's account of running out of gas when she was making the muffins.

Baingan ka Bharta, Indian Roasted Eggplant

21. Claire, of Chez Cayenne, took Meena's advice to Crank up the heat by cooking Baingan ka Bharta, Indian Roasted Eggplant.

Claire's attempts to make this dish previously had been" less than spectacular" but Meena's Mom's recipe changed this. Here is Claire's enthusiastic report: "This time, my eggplant was spectacular. Go, Meena’s mom!"

Mary Lake, of Mitten Machen in Maine, entered two dishes:

Garlic tofu noodles

22. Garlic Tofu Noodles

Mary is vegan and Meena's 'no-recipe recipe' - Garlic Tofu noodles, appealed to her.

Mary said: "What I like about this dish is its convenience. It's a pantry-item feast: the only thing I had to buy was cabbage."

Chili Tofu with Beans and Bok Choy

23.Meena's Chili Tofu with Beans and Bok Choy

"This dish featured the contrasting textures of chewy fried tofu and crunchy cabbage and green beans".

My thanks to everyone who participated to make my hosting duties such a pleasure. This is Part I of the roundup.

Part II is here.

This roundup was written under somewhat trying conditions with my cat, Maxx, plonking himself down on the computer keyboard constantly. If you spot typos and mistakes, THE CAT MADE THEM!

Since the post up I've made the ginger-chili shrimp, and we thought it was absolutely delicious. I haven't posted it up yet, but that will happen soon. It was very plate lunch like, and super rich and full of flavors. We'd eat it again, but not too soon.
